They feature colorful bodies, a clear plastic dome with a pilot, twin spring antennae, and flashing lights and space noises. In Japan and imported to the US by toy distributor Cragstan.
Design & Materials: Constructed primarily of stamped, lithographed tinplate with a clear plastic cockpit dome. The base color is most famously vibrant red, though variations in white or blue exist. The Pilot: A highly stylized, slightly "oriental" looking lithographed tin astronaut sits prominently in the center under the dome. Mystery Action: Uses bump-and-go mechanics to navigate, allowing the saucer to change direction when it hits an obstacle. Lights & Sound: Features flashing red and blue lights combined with a high-pitched "screaming" engine or ray-gun space noise.Smoking Feature: Certain variations (known as the "Jet Smoke" version) feature real metal exhaust pipes at the rear. The toy would stop mid-movement, emit actual smoke from the jets, and then "shift" gears and speed off again.
Antennae: Topped with distinctive twin, angled spring antennae tipped with plastic beads. Variations: Depending on the specific release, some feature a unique lithographed crescent "spark window, " spinning internal gears, or even a vertical tail fin at the back for extra "stability in outer space".
